TUHSD Families,

November is here and the second quarter of learning and activities for our students is very much alive and well. November is also a time for all of us to give gratitude for the positive things that are happening in our lives. I know it may not always feel that way, but there is far more good going on in our world than not.

I am grateful for our wonderful students and our families who continue to support and be involved with our schools. When our families get involved with their child’s high school, even in the smallest way, like selling club t-shirts or taking tickets at a show, it shows our kids the value of a public education and it shows their teachers and administrators how much you care. We are fortunate in the Tempe Union High School District that we have such a supportive community. Each of our high schools can provide countless examples of that support and care. I am grateful for our wonderful students, teachers and staff, our quality programs, and for each of you.

These are some events involving our students and staff where gratitude is certainly appreciated:

Tempe High: Congratulations are in order for our students in the Tempe High Buffalo Marching Band. At their first competition of the season - after moving up a division from last year - they qualified for the State Championships based on their performance. They will perform at the ABODA Arizona State Marching Semifinals (website) at Desert Vista this weekend, along with four other District schools.

McClintock: Students from Kimberly McElwain’s AP Government class coordinated and held a public forum for Governing Board candidates on October 17 at the McClintock High School Auditorium for the community. The event can be viewed on our YouTube channel. Congrats to our Charger students for their hard work on putting on this important event for the community.

Marcos de Niza: The Marcos de Niza Mariachi Virtuoso (advanced) group has been invited to perform the National Anthem for the MLB Arizona League Fall Stars Game in Mesa this weekend. The game will be televised on the MLB Network and students are excited to stay for the game after their performance. Corona del Sol: The Lady Aztec Varsity Volleyball team won the Central Region Championship, which means they have won region titles 6 of the last 7 seasons. Congratulations to the whole team and Coach Ben Maxfield. You can read more here (East Valley Tribune Article) about their spectacular season to date. The team is currently playing in the state tournament and advanced to the second round after a win against Chandler last night.

Mountain Pointe: Pridetronics, the Mountain Pointe Robotics team (website), recently hosted their annual tournament, which was attended by schools from around the region. The team also placed second in individual rankings at the Arizona Robotics League regionals competition. Pridetronics is seeded 5th in the state as they go on to compete in the finals on November 11.

Desert Vista: The Desert Vista Yoga Program (website) has been immensely popular with our Thunder students since its inception in 2011. Teacher Amanda Goe will be offering a complimentary yoga class on Desert Vista's football field on November 24th from 10:30-11:30 am for DV alumni, friends, and family. As the holiday season begins, I want to remind you of the changes that will occur in our school calendars for the 2023/2024 school year. After a year of collaborative planning with our Tri-District partners, Kyrene and Tempe Elementary, and carefully considering input from a wide variety of stakeholders, our respective Governing Boards approved the new calendars. We hope that this will be a step in the right direction for our families who have students in multiple districts. You can find the calendar on our website by clicking on “Calendars and Schedules”. Please remember that this does not affect the current school year but will begin in July 2023.

Familias de TUHSD,

Noviembre está aquí y el segundo trimestre de aprendizaje y actividades para nuestros estudiantes está muy vivo y bien. Noviembre también es un momento para que todos demos gracias por las cosas positivas que están sucediendo en nuestras vidas. Sé que puede que no siempre se sienta así, pero hay muchas más cosas buenas en nuestro mundo que no.

Estoy agradecido por nuestros maravillosos estudiantes y nuestras familias que continúan apoyando y participando en nuestras escuelas. Cuando nuestras familias se involucran con la escuela secundaria de sus hijos, incluso de la manera más pequeña, como vender camisetas de clubes o comprar boletos para un espectáculo, les muestra a nuestros hijos el valor de una educación pública y les muestra a sus maestros y administradores cuánto les importa. . Somos afortunados en el Distrito de Escuelas Secundarias de Tempe Union que tenemos una comunidad tan solidaria. Cada una de nuestras escuelas secundarias puede brindar innumerables ejemplos de ese apoyo y atención. Estoy agradecido por nuestros maravillosos estudiantes, maestros y personal, nuestros programas de calidad y por cada uno de ustedes.

Estos son algunos eventos que involucran a nuestros estudiantes y personal en los que ciertamente se agradece la gratitud:

Tempe High: Felicitaciones a nuestros estudiantes en Tempe High Buffalo Marching Band. En su primera competencia de la temporada, después de ascender de división con respecto al año pasado, se clasificaron para los campeonatos estatales en función de su desempeño. Marcos de Niza: El grupo Marcos de Niza Mariachi Virtuoso (avanzado) ha sido invitado a interpretar el Himno Nacional para el Juego de Estrellas de Otoño de la Liga MLB de Arizona en Mesa este fin de semana. El juego será televisado por MLB Network y los estudiantes están emocionados de quedarse para el juego después de su actuación. Corona del Sol: El equipo de voleibol Lady Aztec Varsity ganó el Campeonato de la Región Central, lo que significa que han ganado títulos regionales en 6 de las últimas 7 temporadas. Ahora que comienza la temporada de vacaciones, quiero recordarles los cambios que ocurrirán en nuestros calendarios escolares para el año escolar 2023/2024. Después de un año de planificación colaborativa con nuestros socios del Tri-Distrito y considerando cuidadosamente los aportes de una amplia variedad de partes interesadas, nuestras respectivas Juntas Directivas aprobaron los nuevos calendarios. Esperamos que este sea un paso en la dirección correcta para nuestras familias que tienen estudiantes en distritos múltiples.
