Visual Arts Strand/Pathway

    The purpose of The Visual Arts strand is to focus on the development of the students’ technical and critical thinking skills using a variety of artistic media. The main emphasis of study is the application of the elements and principles of design to the production of art. Further exploration into the history of art from many diverse cultures and arts impact of modern society as well as the development of visual discrimination and judgment through art criticism and aesthetics is be an integral part of the overall art curriculum.

    General Studies

    This course of study is designed for the student who wants to explore Art broadly. The course of study will encompass all of the major areas in 2D and 3D studio art

    Course of Study (5 Credits)

    • Freshman
      • Art & Design (FA02)
    • Sophomore-Senior
      • Drawing & Painting 1-2 (FA11), Photography 1-2, Ceramics 1-2, Crafts 1-2, Intro to Computer Graphic Art

    2D Studio Emphasis

    This course of study is designed for the student who wants to explore the 2D areas of Painting and Drawing.

    Course of Study (5 Credits)

    • Freshman
      • Drawing & Painting 1-2 (FA11) or Art & Design (FA 02)
    • Sophomore
      • Drawing & Painting 3-4 (FA12) or Honors Art 1-2 (FA31: Dual Credit)
    • Junior
      • Drawing & Painting 5-6() or Honors Art 3-4 (FA32: Dual Credit) or Pre-AP Studio Art (FA22)
    • Senior
      • AP Studio Art (FA22) or Honors Art 5-6( FA35: Dual Credit)
      • Art Elective Recommended Intro to Computer Graphics (FA20) or Photography 1-2 (FA23)
    *Additional requirements to earn AVPA Diploma:
    • Students must participate in all academy art exhibitions all four years
    • Student must develop a physical portfolio representative of all four years
    • Student must conduct an individual senior show either on campus or out in the community
    • Student must develop an electronic portfolio representative of all four years

    3D Studio Emphasis

    This course of study is designed for the student who wants to explore the area of Ceramics.

    Course of Study (5 Credits)
    • Freshman
      • Ceramics 1-2 (FA05)
    • Sophomore
      • Ceramics 3-4 (FA06: Dual Credit)
    • Junior
      • Ceramics 5-6 (FA07: Dual Credit) or 
    • Senior
      • Ceramics 7-8 (FA34: Dual Credit) and
      • Art Elective Recommended Crafts 1-2 (FA27) or Drawing & Painting 1-2 (FA11) or Intro to Computer Graphics (FA20)
