• A critical aspect of any student's academic success is regular and consistent attendance. If a student has an extended leave of absence for a medical reason, the Nurse’s Office must be notified. The Nurse will be able to provide assistance and coordinate any transitions necessary for the student to return to school.

    Excusing a student before school:

All medical and dental appointments should be made after school hours.  If your schedule only permits for appointments during the day, it is important for students to return to school as soon as possible. An excuse covering the absence is required by the front office in order to excuse the student from class for the appointment. It may also be necessary for the parent to excuse the student as well. Please contact your school for attendance requirements.

Your child should definitely be kept home if:

    • His or her temperature has been over 100 degrees in the past 24 hours.
    • He or she has a rash or other condition that could potentially be contagious.
    • He or she has had vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours.

Excusing a student during school hours:

In the event that a student becomes ill while at school, the School Nurse will contact the parent or guardian. Students will be released as per their emergency contact in the student's Health Update Form. The Nurse may also obtain verbal permission from the contact to allow the student to walk or ride the local bus home. Students who leave school because they are sick without consent will be considered truant. All students must see the Nurse in order to be sent homesick. Tempe Union High School District policy states that students are not authorized to use cell phones while on campus. If your child calls home because they're not feeling well, advise them to see the Nurse to be released. In the event of a life-threatening illness or injury, the student will be transported to an emergency facility. The parent or guardian will be notified as soon as possible.

Please notify the school of any changes to emergency contact information, including phone numbers, addresses, and medical conditions. Frequent communication is ESSENTIAL for us to provide effective care for your child.
