TUHSD students honored as Tempe Tardeada scholarship winners

Congratulations are in order for McClintock High School senior Stephanie Martinez Ramos and Desert Vista senior Shanti Oza. Both have been honored as Tempe Tardeada scholarship winners by the City of Tempe!

The City of Tempe has hosted an in-person celebration for the last 22 years. The festival usually offers traditional and modern Hispanic dancing and music, tortilla-making demonstrations, a look at Tempe's historic Hispanic roots, food trucks, activities for the children and more. It's a chance for families from throughout Tempe to gather and spend time with each other. While this year's in-person festival is canceled, you can visit the City of Tempe website for their virtual festivities to celebrate it’s rich, Hispanic heritage.

Stephanie Martinez Ramos is a Senior at McClintock High School, where she is part of the Speech and Debate, AVID, Spanish, Stephanie Ramos Martinez and Charger Tutor Clubs.  In addition, she spends time volunteering for Immigrant Hope, which serves the immigrant community and provides resources such as English classes.  Stephanie aspires to be an immigration attorney so that she can help families experience the joy of becoming a legal resident or citizen of the United States.  Her commitment to help others is summed up in her saying, “I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always said I wanted to be something bigger than who I am right now.”

Shanti Oza is a Senior at Desert Vista High School.  In addition to countless awards and honors, she is a member of Thunder Shanti Oza Buddies, Desert Vista Community Counts, the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, and the Girl Scouts. She is passionate about education and desires to open a school in an underserved community in the future.  On the 2020 Tardeada Scholarship Award, she stated:

“I am thrilled to be the recipient of the 2020 Tempe Tardeada Scholarship! The help of this scholarship is a step to making my dream become a reality. Thank you for giving the scholarship to a future educator. Being raised in this wonderful community whose educators have inspired me, I have felt its outpouring of love daily and want to pay it forward. Not only are you investing in my future, but the future of our students! My mission as a teacher will be to help students acquire knowledge and skills that will help them become the most successful humans being possible. I am determined to support and strengthen students to ensure that they have access to quality education regardless of their circumstance. I will strive to make sure those students who are labelled "at risk" have the tools they need to succeed. Teachers are the key to making a difference. You are tremendously generous and supportive. I am very grateful for this opportunity that will help me reach my higher purpose so that I can help others reach theirs. Thank you for supporting me and my academic path! With your help, I look forward to being able to serve this community.”

Again, congratulations to our TUHSD students and winners. We are so prouf of all you do and your dedication to not only your community but honoring it's diverse history!
