Dr. Kevin J. Mendivil,Superintendent
Dr. Kevin J. Mendivil has served as Superintendent of the Tempe Union High School District (TUHSD) since the fall of 2018. Prior to becoming Superintendent of TUHSD, Dr. Mendivil served as Associate Superintendent for the district for four years, where he was responsible for community relations, human resources and employee benefits, and overall management of district operations. He has been with TUHSD since 2011 when he was hired as the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources until 2014 when he was promoted to Associate Superintendent.
Prior to joining TUHSD, Dr. Mendivil served as Director of Human Resources – Certified Personnel at Mesa Public Schools (MPS) with oversight of over 6000 certified employees. In that role, he guided and developed the leadership for the elementary division of 46 schools. His extensive background in Human Resources and serving as past president and member of the Arizona Association of School Personnel Administrators board has prepared him to realize the value of all employees and their contribution to the education of our students.
Dr. Mendivil has a strong passion for ensuring that all students have equitable and enriching learning opportunities and that the learning environments for students are safe, engaging and where friends and happy memories are developed. He began his career as a special education teacher, then later became principal of Holmes Elementary and turned around the school to receive an Excelling rating.
He understands the teaching and learning process for all students and his experience at every level of K-12 education has provided Dr. Mendivil an advanced knowledge of academia, student needs and key issues in education and employee relations.
Dr. Mendivil holds a B.A. in Special Education from Arizona State University (ASU), an M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix and in 2008 completed his Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision from ASU.Dr. Mendivil serves on a number of local boards and councils, including the American Heart Association – Greater Phoenix Division, Rio Salado Community College President’s Advisory Council and is a member of the Tempe Children’s Cabinet. He proudly resides in the City of Tempe.
