Diversity & Inclusion Initiative

  • Diversity, inclusion, and equity in education is “the active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in communities (intellectual, social, cultural, geographical) with individuals who educators might connect—in ways that increase one’s awareness, content knowledge, cognitive sophistication, and empathic understanding of the complex ways individuals interact within systems and institutions” (AAC&U, 2009/ University of Arizona.)

The Tempe Union High School District recognizes that all in the school district (especially the students) benefit when issues of diversity and inclusion are addressed and given the required attention. “Managing diversity is an on-going process that unleashes the various talents and capabilities which a diverse population brings to an organization, community or society, so as to create a wholesome, inclusive environment …” (Rosado, 2006.)

Benefits of a Diverse School Community

The research on the benefits of a school that is representative of the various diverse groups (i.e, race, ethnicity, gender, language, differently able, immigrant, sexual orientation, etc.) indicates and advocates that these schools are academically beneficial and aids in preparing students for an increasingly diverse nation and the world. Diverse schools, when effectively managed can produce educational lifelong benefits, enhance students’ civic values, improve student learning, and prepare students for higher education and successful careers. Students experience deeper ways of thinking, higher aspirations, and develop positive interactions with diverse groups of peers and adults.
