Staff FAQ: Returning to Work from HR

  • How will the work environment and work duties change as a result of the coronavirus pandemic?

  • I do not have a chronic health condition or disability; however, I am uncomfortable coming back to work. Are there any options for me?

  • How will employees with a fever and/or dry cough and/or respiratory illnesses be managed if they report to work?

  • What should an employee do if they realize they are sick while at work?

  • Will we be required to wear face coverings and can a teacher require a student or parent to wear a face covering?

  • Will teachers receive any kind of bonus (hazard pay) for returning to work?

  • Will the District be offering any early retirement incentives for my age cohort because of Covid-19?

  • What if someone gets COVID-19 and it is traced back to exposure at school? Will TUHSD cover medical expenses?

  • Who in Human Resources may I Contact if I have Questions?

Leaves, Absences, and Staffing

  • There may be several reasons an employee would request or be eligible for absences. These may include: 

    • COVID-19 Related Absence – Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) covered leave under the: 
      • Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act 
      • Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act 
    • Workplace accommodation or modified work assignment due to a pre-existing chronic health condition or disability that places you at greater risk for negative effects of COVID-19 
    • Unpaid Leave of Absence (See TUHSD Board Policy GCCC and Regulation GCCC-R)

  • What is a COVID-19 related absence?

  • I have a pre-existing chronic health condition or disability that places me at higher risk if I contract COVID-19. Are there options to reduce my exposure?

  • What if I want to take unpaid leave of absence; may I do so?

  • Will employees lose their jobs in the event of another school closure or spike in COVID-19 cases?

  • Will I be asked to perform duties outside of my normal job description, or reassigned to another position?

  • If an employee is reassigned to a different job, will they receive an increase (or reduction) in pay?

  • How will we identify and onboard staff to fill needed roles?

  • If a teacher is out ill for an extended time with the virus, how will coverage for his/her class be handled?

Tempe Union Online (TUOL)

  • Students who wish to attend school in an online environment and NOT participate in a brick and mortar opportunity may enroll in our Tempe Union Online program. Based upon the requests of our families, the District will be staffing for possible increased enrollment in this program and will be looking for teachers who are interested in the online setting.

  • How do I apply for an online teaching position?

  • Can I be assured I will be assigned to a TUOL course?

  • How will the selection be made?

  • What skills or qualifications should a TUOL teacher have?

  • Will the TUOL position continue throughout the school year?

  • If I am selected for TUOL, will I be guaranteed that I return to my current school?

TUHSD Employee Health and Safety

  • When all staff return to school sites, here are a few general things you can expect: 

    • Hand sanitizer and wipes will be supplied to all classrooms for student and staff use.
    • Temperature checks will be taken at points of entry for all staff and students.
    • Depending where staff park, points of entry have been identified at each school site.
    • Cleaning will take place on a daily basis by our custodial staff members. In addition, staff and students will clean their work spaces prior to and after usage.

  • Many teachers work in classrooms with no open windows. What can be done to increase better air filtration in our classrooms?

  • Is there a possibility of having staff members get an antibody test as it would add a layer of confidence to face to face teaching?

  • How do we protect teachers who are sharing rooms and/or equipment?
