2021 TUHSD Film Festival
Tempe Union High School District is proud to celebrate our Film & TV program through our annual Film Festival. Film & TV students from Compadre Academy, Corona del Sol, McClintock, Mountain Pointe, and Desert Vista were tasked to create feature films. All submitted entries had to include several required elements, including pops, characters, and lines of dialogue. Students could create films on their own, or work in small teams. Students were given a week from start to finish to complete their films for submission.
Required materials included:
Required Prop (A prop that must be visible at some point during the film):
- Tape
Required Character (A character that must be mentioned by name at some point during the film):
- Taylor the essential worker
Lines of Dialogue (Must be said aloud, or made complete visible during the film):
- Nobody questions who built the pyramids in Mexico
- Let's all be unique TOGETHER
Films were ranked in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Best Picture, as well as in several other categories celebrating editing, scriptwriting, and best use of required materials.
Here are the 2021 TUHSD Film Festival winners:
- 1st Place: Pitch Day – Elian Alvarez, Leah Gunter, Mason Rich from Corona del Sol
- 2nd Place: Jesse and Taylor’s Totally Epic High School Bucket List – Chandler Carlisle, Layla Reif from Corona del Sol
- 3rd Place: The Bucket List – Kayler Catron, Gavin Godinez from Desert Vista
- Best Use of Character: Code Red – Julie Johnson from McClintock
- Best Use of Prop: Medical Mayhem Tape – Maria Lopez, Marie Taylor from McClintock
- Best Use of Required Dialogue: Pitch Day – Elian Alvarez, Leah Gunter, Mason Rich from Corona del Sol
- Best Screenplay: Parenting – Shayla Mckenzie, Zoe McCollum from Mountain Pointe
- Best Editing: Pitch Day – Elian Alvarez, Leah Gunter, Mason Rich from Corona del Sol
- Best Cinematography: Bucket List – Kayler Catron, Gavin Godinez from Desert Vista
- Fan Favorite: Pitch Day – Elian Alvarez, Leah Gunter, Mason Rich from Corona del Sol
- A big SHOUT-OUT to Sarah Jackson for her contributions to the prizes and to Isaac Easley for MCing the night!
- Thank you to our Film and TV teachers - Wayne Montes De Oca, Karen Crane, Ben Forbes, Suzanne Idler, and Norris Thomas. This group of dedicated professionals continues to give so much of their time and effort to not just this event but to their students day in and day out.

2021 TUHSD Film Festival Judges
- Isaac Easley, Master of Ceremonies - is an instructor in video journalism and innovation. Isaac teaches broadcast classes, produces promotional videos for the school, and works with students in Cronkite News on the Local TV News Innovation project under a Knight Foundation grant.
- T.J. Chambers - a Los Angeles-based television producer, showrunner, and writer with experience in live TV events, late-night comedy, sketch, talk, travel, reality, hidden camera, and more for network, cable, and digital broadcast.
- Estlin Feigley - Fresh Films Founder & Film Director. Estlin Feigley is co-founder, Creative Director, and Film Director of Fresh Films television, film, and documentary projects.
- Rick Fowler, M.Ed. - an Instructor at SPOT 127, KJZZ’s Youth Media Center in Tempe, Arizona. Prior to joining SPOT 127, he taught production in AA and BA degree tracks at three Arizona colleges.
- Sarah Happel Jackson - a Marcos de Niza High School alumna ('98) Sarah Happel Jackson is an executive producer with James Cordon's Fulwell 73 Production Company in Hollywood.
- Darrin G. Ramage - over the course of the last 29 years Darrin has produced 19 successful films such as Death Factory, Hell’s Highway, Goth and Dark Places. Mr. Ramage is President of film conglomerate M3 - Maxim Media Marketing, Inc and CEO of production facilities Sun Studios of Arizona.
- Ty Ng - has been a member of the Screen Actors Guild for over 21 years. He started his career as an actor in theater before moving on to working on network TV shows and ultimately feature films. Ty is an independent filmmaker with his own production company TwinTygr Films.
- Jakob Owens - a Filmmaker/Entrepreneur based in Los Angeles California and a graduate of McClintock High School ('08). His work has been displayed on major television networks such as MTV, VH1, BET, REVOLT, ESPN, and more.
