On Saturday, Aug. 5, 71 students in the Tempe Union High School District received visits from staff and community volunteers to let them know, "we want you back."
The "We Want You Back" attendance initiative is a partnership between the Tempe Union High School District and the Mayor Offices of Tempe and Guadalupe to seek out and connect with students who have/or potentially dropped out of TUHSD.
The home visits partner educational staff, city officials and community members to meet with students and their families about the importance of attending school. Students are encouraged to come back, finish their high school education and be a TUHSD graduate.
This year, the effort welcomed Octavio Pulido Nevarez and Paola Morales from Telemundo as community volunteers. As high profile members of the Spanish-speaking community, their participation was extemely impactful for several families.
This is the second walk hosted by TUHSD. In January, more than 70 volunteers visited 67 students’ home. Ten students returned to school. The program is patterned after Tucson’s Steps to Success.
