Dear TUHSD Families,

Today marks the start of our eighth week of the school year - with only two weeks left until Fall Break. I know there have been bumps along the way but I am so pleased that our school year has progressed largely uninterrupted and that we have our students back on campus to learn.

That being said, over the past few weeks, it has become apparent that students are having challenges and complications with returning to a regular schedule. We know that there are long-term social and emotional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the overall disruption to our lives. It is taking longer for students to become acclimated to being in school every day with all of their peers. We are seeing a higher number of discipline issues on campuses that are rooted in disrespect. We are also seeing a fundamental lack of respect for our teachers and staff. Behaving with integrity and treating others with kindness and dignity are important core values for Tempe Union.

I need your help. It is so important that we all come together and practice kindness and respect towards others, and remember the social and behavioral norms that are expected of all of us. As a reminder, our student handbook outlines our expectations for our students while they are on campus and participating in activities/athletics. Our number one expectation for our students is respectful behavior and to treat others with dignity, consideration and kindness.

Families and parents, you are the most important role model in your student’s life. Please let your children see you upholding these behaviors and core values. Our students look to the adults in their life to set a positive example and that includes all of us.

Please know that we understand how difficult the past year and a half has been for our families. We have resources available for you, including an upcoming series of workshops for parents in collaboration with the City of Tempe.

When we demonstrate the expectations we have for our students, these challenging times will pass. I know we can achieve this when we work together. I know these have been, and continue to be, difficult times. We are all in this together.

Estimadas familias de TUHSD,

Hoy marca el comienzo de nuestra octava semana del año escolar, con solo dos semanas para las vacaciones de otoño. Sé que ha habido obstáculos en el camino, pero estoy muy contento de que nuestro año escolar haya progresado en gran medida sin interrupciones y que tengamos a nuestros estudiantes de regreso en el campus para aprender.

Dicho esto, durante las últimas semanas, se ha hecho evidente que los estudiantes están teniendo desafíos y complicaciones para regresar a un horario regular. Sabemos que hay efectos sociales y emocionales a largo plazo de la pandemia de COVID-19 y la interrupción general de nuestras vidas. A los estudiantes les está tomando más tiempo aclimatarse a estar en la escuela todos los días con todos sus compañeros. Estamos viendo un mayor número de problemas de disciplina en los campus que tienen su origen en la falta de respeto. También estamos viendo una falta fundamental de respeto por nuestros maestros y personal. Comportarse con integridad y tratar a los demás con amabilidad y dignidad son valores fundamentales importantes para Tempe Union.

Es muy importante que todos nos reunamos y practiquemos la bondad y el respeto hacia los demás, y recordemos las normas sociales y de comportamiento que se esperan de todos nosotros. Como recordatorio, nuestro manual del estudiante describe nuestras expectativas para nuestros estudiantes mientras están en el campus y participan en actividades / atletismo. Nuestra expectativa número uno para nuestros estudiantes es un comportamiento respetuoso y tratar a los demás con dignidad, consideración y amabilidad.
