MPHS students attend Hermanas Latinas STEM Conference
Twenty-four Latina students at Mountain Pointe High School seized the opportunity to participate in hands-on science workshops at the Hermanas Latinas STEM conference at South Mountain Community College held December 2, 2016.
The students also took part in a town hall meeting and were able to meet with representatives from the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Grand Canyon University several other colleges and universities to learn about school admissions.
According to SMCC, nationally, the low number of students pursuing education and careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) has become a critical concern, but beyond that fact is the even lower likelihood that Hispanic females will enter STEM fields.
Each program at today's conference was led by volunteers from the technology and science industries.
