Thunder band honored by music education group for community outreach concert

Desert Vista's Thunder Band program was honored for its contributions to the annual Tempe event "Music Under the Stars" by Music for All, a national music education organization.

Music Under the Stars, which originated in 2009 under the direction of Desert Vista band director Josh Thye, brings the Tempe community together for an evening of live music accompanied by a view of Tempe Town Lake. The show has featured performances by the Arizona Wind Symphony, The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps and several Tempe Union High School District music programs.

The free event brings together thousands of audiences members every year.

The annual event has grow over the past 10 years, now run by the City of Tempe's Office of Arts Development. The evening has expanded to include collaborative and combined ensembles, appearances by city officials and leaders and a more diverse variety of food options.

Music Under The Stars received a Silver Award in the category of Engagement with Elected Officials by Music For All's Advocacy in Action Awards. Desert Vista was just one of two Arizona schools honored by the inaugural awards show.

Music for All's mission it to expand the role of music and the arts in education, to heightening the public’s appreciation of the value of music and arts education, and to creating a positive environment for the arts through societal change.
