Buffaloes win big at 2019 Verizon Innovative Learning Showcase

Tempe High DECA

Tempe High School students won big at the 2019 Verizon Innovative Learning Final Showcase where they pitched their original ideas to help solve real-world problems in the community.

Student teams worked with local, small businesses to help create technology-based solutions that would ultimately help the business serve their community better. This year's teams worked with All About Golf and Changing Hands Bookstore.

All About Golf wanted to help beginning golfers learn more about their golf equipment needs. The student team created AR codes for various types of golf equipment that would allow users to view videos explaining the equipment.

Changing Hands Bookstore wanted to encourage young children to become more interested in reading books. The student team created an AR code on the cover of a children's book that would allow the user to watch a video of the characters acting out the story.

The teams were lead by Tempe High Business faculty Scott Berren, who teaches Marketing, Advanced Marketing, Financial Planning and Sports and Entertainment Marketing. Students were also supported by Marketing faculty Wayne Montes de Oca and Film Study faculty and Robotics sponsor Mike Warner.

During the Final Showcase at ASU’s Scottsdale Innovation center SkySong, student teams discussed their project in a gallery walk and then pitched their project in a formal presentation to a panel of judges.

First Place Team - All About Golf: Eddy Vega, Alexis De La Garza, Craig Pletzke, and Adan Penuelas. Each member of this team won a MacBook Air.

Second Place Team & Crowd Favorite - Changing Hands Bookstore: Annie Beltran, Enrique Ontiveros, Gabe Hernandez, and Amaya Chatman. Each member of this team won AirPods.

This is Tempe High School's second year of a two year grant from Verizon. Marketing is part of Tempe Union High School District’s Career and Technical Education program.

Congratulations, Buffaloes!
