Congratulations to our 5 Tempe Union Dell Scholars Program 2020-2021 Semifinalists!

  • Sergio Ponce
  • Angelica Aguilera
  • Jessica Roman
  • Brayan Lopez Flores
  • Sandra Arce Olmos

All 5 of these students are members of our AVID Program. This program’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Funded by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to enabling children and youth to achieve their potential, the Dell Scholars program offers an opportunity for under-served and lower income students to realize their dream of a college education. $20,000 scholarships are offered to students for full-time study to complete a bachelor's degree program.

While many students dream of obtaining a college degree, life sometimes gets in the way. Dell Scholars offers comprehensive, individualized support to help students overcome academic challenges, increase financial literacy, and navigate the personal circumstances that impact their college dreams.

The deadline for the application was December 1st, and students had to demonstrate the following criteria to be considered:

  • Participating in a Michael & Susan Dell Foundation approved college readiness program in grades 11 and 12
  • Graduating from an accredited high school this academic year
  • Earning a minimum of a 2.4 GPA
  • Demonstrated need for financial assistance
  • Eligible to receive a federal Pell grant in first year of college
  • Planning to enroll full-time in a bachelor's degree program at an accredited higher education institution in the fall directly after your graduation from high school

Semifinalists were announced on December 10, 2020 and students will submit the necessary semifinalist materials by the end of January. The Dell Scholars will be announced and honored on March 9, 2021.

Tempe High’s AVID Coordinator, Brandon Thompson, shared some special words about the students he gets to work with saying, “I am so proud of each and everyone of our AVID students. Kids today who reach for their dreams remind us adults that if we, ‘advance confidently in the direction of our dreams, and endeavor to live the life which we have imagined, we will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.’”

Congratulations again to our 5 Dell Scholar students, we are so proud of all your hard work and dedication to your education, especially during these difficult times.
