Governing Board Unanimously Adopts a Social-Emotional Wellness Resolution
Tempe Union High School District’s Governing Board unanimously adopted a social-emotional wellness resolution at their meeting on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.
Board member Armando Montero read the resolution in its entirety during the meeting. The full text of the resolution can be found online here - PDF. Montero has been a vocal advocate for the promotion of social-emotional wellness during his time as a board member and campaign, as well as during his time as a Desert Vista High School student.
"This resolution reaffirms our steadfast commitment to prioritizing the social-emotional needs of all of our students,” Montero said. “I am thankful to my fellow board members and district leaders who share a similar passion on this issue and I am looking forward to working with the advisory committee to build a long-term, sustainable plan to meet the social-emotional needs of all students."
The resolution established an ad-hoc committee, which will be chaired by Montero and made up of students, staff, parents, community members and other stakeholders.
When introducing the resolution, Superintendent Kevin Mendivil shared that it was a step that the District had wanted to take for some time, and was moved forward by the passion that Montero brought to the issue. The resolution also aligns with the District’s goal of prioritizing social, emotional, and mental health and wellness of students and staff.
Governing Board President Brian Garcia, and board members Andres Barraza, Berdetta Hodge, and Sarah James, also shared their support of the resolution, and thanked both Montero and District administration for their leadership on the issue.
“Kids are always our number one priority in Tempe Union, and this is one more way of expressing that priority,” said Superintendent Kevin Mendivil.
Additional information on the work of the ad-hoc committee will be presented during the May 21, 2021 Governing Board meeting.
