The Tempe Union High School District is recruiting family/parent volunteers for the Family Advisory Council to the Superintendent (FACS).

Introduction

The Family Advisory Council to the Superintendent (FACS) provides input on ways to improve communication and parent engagement at the district and local school level and also provides family/parent advocacy trainings to support student learning. Council members are family/parents/legal guardians who have at least one child in the district and who reflect the diversity of our community. FACS meetings are facilitated by Tempe Union staff.

Mission

The Family Advisory Council to the Superintendent (FACS) will advise the Superintendent and district leaders on ways our schools and the school district can provide a welcoming environment to all families, develop strong school-home partnerships, and promote the active participation of parents and families for the achievement and well-being of all students.

The main duties of FACS members will be to:

  • Identify and recommend strategies to increase school-family partnerships at the district and campus level.
  • Identify and recommend culturally appropriate practices to welcome and engage diverse families in all schools.
  • Continually work collaboratively to develop the FACS charter, responsibilities, and structure and best practices; provide recommendations to the Superintendent for improvements to help guide the success of the charter to ensure we are meeting our goals.
  • Assist and support school district administrators’ activities and efforts to engage parents and community members.
  • Provide advice on innovative ways to communicate with parents about system-wide initiatives, programs, and activities.
  • Represent their school or constituency group by seeking their input and feedback.
  • Actively participate in the process by listening and sharing information.
  • Commit to pursuing the interests of every student in the Tempe Union High School District.

What is the structure of FACS?

The Council is composed of 18 family members representing each of the six high schools within the Tempe Union High School District, with three representatives from each high school.

What is the process for family/parents/guardians who are interested in serving on the FACS?

Nominations are welcome from parents, staff, community organizations, and other members of the TUHSD community. Self-nominations will be accepted. The deadline for submission of nominations for the 2021–2022 school year has been extended to October 28, 2021, by 5 PM.

How are members chosen to serve on FACS?

To ensure broad representation, the nominations of potential members will be evaluated on a variety of factors, including geographic location of residence to ensure representation of each school community and neighborhood, child’s grade level, and areas of interest and experience related to TUHSD programs and services including, but not limited to, special education, gifted and talented, and EL (Expeditionary Learning). FACS membership will reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of our student population.

When will the FACS meetings be held?

FACS will meet twice per quarter during the 2021–2022 school year. The first meeting will be held at the District Offices at 500 West Guadalupe. The remainder of the meetings will be held at different school sites. To be respectful of everyone’s time we anticipate the meetings to last no more than 90 minutes. The first meeting will be held on TBD

What will be expected of FACS members?

Each member will serve a two-year term. Members may not serve for more than two consecutive terms. FACS representatives must be willing to have contact information posted on the TUHSD website to allow area stakeholders to communicate and provide input. FACS members will be expected to attend all scheduled meetings; prepare for each meeting as needed; work in a collaborative fashion with each other and with school system staff; express views and opinions openly, constructively, and respectfully; and help facilitate parent advocacy trainings. Although staff will develop an agenda for each meeting, FACS representatives may submit discussion items for consideration.
