TUHSD | Tempe Union to Partner with Varsity Media Foundation on Student Internships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TEMPE UNION TO PARTNER WITH VARSITY MEDIA FOUNDATION ON STUDENT INTERNSHIPS

March 31, 2023 – Tempe Union High School District has announced plans to launch a student internship program in collaboration with Varsity Media Foundation. Varsity Media Foundation provides educational opportunities for students who are interested in broadcast production and sports journalism to showcase their talent and hone their skills through a wide variety of hands-on work, including producing and broadcasting on the popular Saturday morning radio show “Varsity Sports Show” that airs from 8 AM to 10 AM on 1060 KDUS.

Students will also have the opportunity to work in the areas of podcasting, livestream, and television through game coverage of sporting events throughout the Valley at the youth, high school, and college levels.

The internship program will formally debut in Fall 2023 and students will have the opportunity to work in paid positions and earn credits towards graduation through Tempe Union’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. Several current Tempe Union students have already had the opportunity to work with Varsity Media through a pilot program this past year.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to apply what we learn in the classroom to the real world,” said Cloe Bolen, McClintock High School senior. “It also gives me a chance to build my reel and to network with like-minded individuals.”

Varsity Media Foundation currently partners with Arizona universities and community colleges on a similar internship program. This will be their first formal partnership with a high school district.

“We are always looking for opportunities for our students to explore their interests and gain new skills,” said Superintendent Dr. Kevin Mendivil. “This internship program is a wonderful way for our students to gain valuable work experience as they transition beyond our district and into the world.”
